But the concept predates these politicians: the earliest english documented use of the phrase appears as the title of a 1930 book by Ishtiaq Husain Qureshi, an Indian historian and later vice‑chancellor of the University of Karachi. الإسلام دين السلام is essentially a modern arabic phrase from 20th century or at earliest the 19th century but the idea of Islam as a religion of peace is certainly within the Qu'ran and the hadiths (Qur’an 2:208), Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, and particularly Sunan Ibn Mājah, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
